چکیده

Evidence is accumulating that autophagy occurs in advanced atherosclerotic plaques. Although there is an almost relentless discovery of molecules that are involved in autophagy, studies of selective autophagy induction or inhibition using knockout mice are just now beginning to reveal its biological significance. Most likely, autophagy safeguards plaque cells against cellular distress, in particular oxidative injury, by degrading the damaged intracellular material. In this way, autophagy is protective and contributes to cellular recovery in an unfavorable environment. Pharmacological approaches have recently been developed to stabilize vulnerable, rupture-prone lesions through induction of autophagy. This approach has proven to be successful in short-term studies. However, how autophagy induction affects processes such as inflammation remains to be elucidated and is currently under investigation. This review highlights the possibilities for exploiting autophagy as a drug target for plaque stabilization. (Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2011;31:2787-2791.)

Mechanisms of acute coronary syndromes and the potential role of statins.

The conventional concepts of the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes are changing. High-risk lesions are not necessarily the angiographicaly 'tight' stenoses. Rather, vulnerable lesions are those that are unstable, with a large lipid core and a thin fibrous cap. Plaque instability is closely related to the development of inflammation within the intima and acute coronary syndromes result fr...

INVESTIGATIONS ON THE DRUG-PROTEIN IN TERAC TION OF CERTAIN NEW POTENTIAL LOCAL ANAESTHETICS

Generally, plasma proteins owe their binding capacity to the presence of aminoacid units which enter into intra- and intermolecular hydrophobic bonding with a diverse range of endo- and exogenous chemical substances. The intermolecular interactions between the hydrophobic areas of drug molecules and those of plasma proteins play an important role in drug-macromolecular complex formation and...

Therapeutic potential of Paclitaxel against COVID-19

The coronavirus disease-2019(COVID-19) was reported in Wuhan, China, in late December 2019 and soon became the most serious global health challenge due to high rate of human-to-human transmission. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2), is a single-stranded RNA virus and belongs to the large Coronaviridae family. Paclitaxel, an antineoplastic drug extracted from the Tax...

Novel Small Molecules against Two Binding Sites of Wnt2 Protein as potential Drug Candidates for Colorectal Cancer: A Structure Based Virtual Screening Approach

Wnts are the major ligands responsible for activating Wnt signaling pathway through binding to Frizzled proteins (Fzd) as the receptors. Among these ligands, Wnt2 plays the main role in the tumorigenesis of several human cancers especially colorectal cancer (CRC). Therefore, it can be considered as a potential drug target. The aim of this study was to identify potential drug candidates ...
